Clever Tortoise Star Charts

Reinforcement charts to empower children to learn to work towards a goal.

Our Star Charts are about teaching a child how to choose a goal, to learn that breaking a goal into small achievable steps is the best way to reach your potential. We want children to learn that slow and steady wins the race, that working on something consistently at a manageable consistent pace is the best way to succeed.

We want children to learn that achieving a goal, learning something knew, being able to do something that you couldn’t do before by working on it at a steady pace is a strategy that is great whether you are preparing for a piano exam, learning to tie your shoes, learning a language whether you are 4 or 8 or 14 or 40!

Our charts are varied to match the variation of goals, some may take a week to achieve, two weeks, or a month.

Different charts work for different skills and for different children.

We want to give parents a tool to help children to see their progress by having a visual reminder of the steps to success. We also want children to learn to wait for a reward and acquire the skill to work for a goal that might be far off.

The aim of a Clever Tortoise star chart is not to have parents under pressure to buy prizes/spending money to get children to do what they need to do, not every skill needs a prize, the prize is the acquisition of the skill, reaching the goal is the prize. We want to support parents/teachers/therapists in supporting children to soar!

A skateboard track

Marble Jars

The number of marbles in the jar varied depending on the difficulty of the skill. At Clever Tortoise HQ we have used the biggest marble jar to build new habits drinking more water, every 1litre of water gains a marble in the marble jar – our prize is healthier life style, good habits and feeling well! Colin would like a new water bottle so maybe if he does a good job he may get a new water bottle too.

Positive Thought Tree

An important chart for children who find it tricky to remember the good stuff from a day, so coming home from school or a work a family can note the good things from the day and share the positives with the family. This is not to ignore the bad that may have happened but to remember the good too.
